Saint Paul Rat Removal Tip: City and County Services Are No Help with Rat Control

Imagine the horror felt when a homeowner finds that they have been infested by nasty little rodents. Mice and rats, to be specific, can do a lot of damage to a residence. They also carry harmful diseases that can be transmitted to humans and household pets.

For many people, animal control is a natural resource. They assume that a single call to the local animal control or wildlife management services will send the Calvary to rid their homes of these nasty little critters.

Unfortunately, that just isn't the case. As dirty as they are, these critters are considered more of a nuisance, but they are not deemed a public threat. Since there is no perceived danger to society, city and country officials will not get involved.

Homeowners Responsibility

Unfortunately, the responsibility of rat removal falls on the homeowner every time. You can argue the point until you are blue in the face, but you won't win.

City and country services consider rats to be a domestic rodent. Resources are already scarce, and they will not allocate any to help you fix your problem. These services only step in for animals that are considered wild and dangerous. Rats just do not make the cut.

The only two options you have are to try to rid the house yourself or call an expert. Rat removal can be pricy both ways and it is not an easy task. If you must spend the money, you should probably hire a professional and ensure that it is done correctly.

DIY Rat Control

Eliminating a rat population from your home is very involved. First, you must find all entry ways where they are coming in. Then you must seal these entries with metal or steel mesh. Rats can squeeze through any hole the size of a quarter, no matter how big they are.

Once all the entry ways are sealed, then you can begin to trap them. You must set and bait multiple traps to ensure you catch every rat. The traps must be checked daily. Remove the ones that have been caught and reset the traps until you are confident you have caught all the rats.

After all the rats have been removed, you must thoroughly clean the feces they left behind. It has pheromones in it that will attract other rats. It is important to wear the proper protective equipment to protect yourself in the process. You must also completely disinfect the area to remove the stench and the pheromones left behind.
